But to answer your question the first game fell flat + released late into the seventh generation. Also had next to no marketing and painfully boring gameplay, AND it was hardly a horror game. Heard that Evil Within 2 is leagues better but sorry my mouth is still stained with EW1's piss.

Its structure was too similar to RE4's village, castle, island setup.
It took the "actually there's multiple safeheads" twist from SH2.
It had no original bone in its body, which is why zoomers loved it and boomers hated it. Boomers saw a rehash whereas zoomers thought it was novel and original.
And zoomers don't have the attention span for an 8 hour long game so it flopped so the demographic it pandered to couldn't carry it.

Because whoever was in charge of the first game's DLC took over for the sequel and Mikami apparently disagreed hard with the new direction. I think it was more stealth and crafting that took away from the horror aspect.
