Why did every single immersive sim bombed sales?

Bad advertising?

Niche market.

It's a very, very niche genre.

immersive sim sounds like the most reddit thing i've seen on this site besides the webm of the guy narrating that "this sir, is based and red pilled" pic of the pepe in a top hat

Sir, please I didn't invent the term.

I don't think these games ever were advertised as immersive sims.

Like what the fuck is this trailer? You can easily mistake the game for some survival horror.

For the longest time I had no idea what that genre really was, but played the fuck outta all of them. I think the genre might suffer from people not knowing the specifics of what makes it special.

Immersive sims? You mean first person metroidvanias?

I personally call them first person adventure games. "immersive sim" is such an extremely stupid and pretentious name I can't believe people uses it seriously.

I think it's just something that doesn't appeal to to normalfags. The average dumbass wants to be shown and told exactly what to do and how to do it. When you have to look and think for yourself they have no idea what to do.

You can call it whatever you want as long as we all know what we are talking about.

I couldn't get into System Shock until it got mouselook; with it it becomes an extremely fun game to play.
I personally like 2 the most but 1 is leaps and bounds the superior game.

That's the issue.
>It kinda looks like survival horror
>It kinda looks sci-fi
>It kinda looks RPG
No one ever advertises
>It kinda looks like an immersive sim
Those games suffer from an identity crisis, where it's a bunch of small things borrowed from other genres, but done in a more open and creative way.

Dishonored 1 (and 2 I think?) sold pretty well, Prey is a hidden gem that did badly because of shitty advertising and Deathloop did pretty alright I think. I don't think the immersive sim genre is a guaranteed bomb, it's just that nobody is making them besides Arkane.
I still fucking hate squeenix for what they did to DX ;_;

the only ones that did well were ones that advertised themselves as shooters, hate bioshock all you want but it sold well because it was an easy concept and all the npcs are enemies you shoot at. Anything that requires more nuance than that is too hard for normies.

Yeah the control scheme was ridiculous coming even from 90's titles. It is astounding the stuff they pulled off in 1994 no less.

Prey has such shit marketing I only found it was a System Shock clone because Any Forums of all people told me.
I wish I had bought Prey 2017 day one instead of Wolfenstein II (which was a massive disappointment).

>The 2nd game finally starts ramping up, plot thickens, at last it's finally getting juicy
>lol Illuminati n'shit. Roll credits
NIGGA?! WHAT?!

Please define what an Immersive Sim is. You can't, its a retarded buzzword that doesn't mean anything.

Because they feel horrible to play if you're not a turboautist

Most of them are just not good games and people regularly name them as their favorites only because they have a mystical aura of being smart games. That's how it should be, right? The poor, downtrodden but excellent genre that gets oppressed by the best-sellers. The truth is, people just don't like or play these games, they just claim to do, in order to stand out.

Enjoyed 1 and 2 didn't like infinite. Although I was
disappointed that they didn't add back in stuff that made System Shock 2 great with a lot of polish rather they dumbed down many things.
