Over the last few weeks people have been saying that Elden Ring is the best open world game ever made...

Neither of them should've been open world. ER is dark souls spread out over big empty open fields and botw is a walking sim that it sacrificed everything for and forgot it was a zelda game. It's telling that ER is being lauded for being the first open world game to actually have ample good content, but it still doesn't justify being open world.
Elder scrolls may be jank with shit combat, but it at least understands what justifies making an open world to begin with; a proper liveable world with a focus on worldbuilding and lore.
