Actually, I find it very difficult to listen to vg music outside the context of the video game. The sole exception I think is the Armored Core/FreQuency stuff.

people who only listen to video game music seriously need to branch out. even the very best game music can only reach the same level as commercial music, not surpass.
stuff like 3rd strike OST and nobuo uematsu are the only things that are in the same ball park for me.
i think its just a limitation of the medium. 'scores' to match certain scenes are shackled musically by whatever is happening on screen. also video game music usually has to loop, so often can't have complete structures
