Yes but the dude was born in the 30s and didn't understand the internet or technology in general.
Do mind that Japan doesn't really have home computers and only got actual widespread internet access recently with tablets and smartphones.
Also, the whole entertainment business is completely controlled by an handful of entities since the US forced their companies to be fused after the end of the war for easier supervision.
This complete control over the market and artists also allowed Johnny to completely ditch the digital markets for decades and keep pumping physical sales.
