I remember the past few april fools causing a lot of commotion in the online discourse (i.e. twitter) for being "unprofessional" or being an artifact of the early internet's nerd culture - which is "bad" because it's associated with misogyny and racism and also tricking people is exclusionary and potentially triggering ("gaslighting") and people calling for tech companies to stop the pranks

Everyone on the internet is in the wrong side of Poe's law now so you can't really do things like elaborate jokes anymore because people will buy into it way too hard and then leash out for being made a fool.

That has more to do with the fact that every game is rushed out the door with oppressive deadlines that cause months of non-stop crunch time.
Fun stuff like easter eggs was often added after games went gold and the devs still had a few weeks/months to fill before release.

It's weird how they would hate someone in gaming for trying to pull a prank on April Fool's, calling them unprofessional yet those same faggots wants their favourite dev to voice opinion in politics or world affairs. I remember people trying to start a boycott with Valve/Steam because they was one of the very few companies that did not post anything related to BLM and the back guy that died that sparked the riots.

April fools only work when people aren't expecting it. It's like telling a joke when someone already knows the punchline. And people gotten their fill of internet memes and stuff from 2 years stuck at home. It stopped being special now.

They stopped doing it because their joke projects and products were more appealing than their real ones
