As someone that's binging literally every game and am currently on Cold Steel 3, he should just start from Sky. Sky and Crossbell are better games anyway and shouldn't be skipped just because they're afraid of the series length. In fact, I can't imagine telling someone to start with CS considering it's absurdly dog shit pacing and repetitive structure. I don't think I would have even gave CS2, which was a much better game, if I started with CS1 and wasn't already invested.
