Assuming you're a novice, work on your defense game. Observe and recognize when an opponent's move leaves them open and wait for that move, then punish.
For most fighting games defense is a mix between low/overhead/throw. The balance of these depends on the game but throws are situational, so don't worry about those too much at first. If an opponent is airborne - it's an overhead, so block standing.
It can't all be defense and reaction but focusing on this should help you grip the basics quicker.
