Am I missing something with this? I used it early to mid game and it was nice for staggering, but damage wise, this falls behind really badly to something like glintstone pebble aow or ice lance aow, which has the same stagger potential, but way more damage.

Honestly there's so much broken shit in this game, including the bosses than not using the most OP shit you can find and using every tool at your disposal will just make your experience miserable.

I never used it for damage but its insanely good for posture break even late game.

The stagger is extremely good all the way

If used as an Ash of War, it scales with shield damage and will kill even end game bosses in 3-6 casts.
You can also parry your own spell to activate it, including unlimited use item ones like the revenant bell.

That's the whole point. It does way more poise damage than any other phalanx for barely any FP. You don't get much poise damage from normal sorceries, so this is essential if you want to get those criticals.

cannon of haima as an opener specifically for groups of clumped up enemies
night maiden's mist for enemies that don't move much
loretta's greatbow (and eventually mastery)
night shard for faggots that read inputs
ambush shard for shields or enemies you don't have a clear line of sight on

Rock Sling

Ancient death rancor is a pretty good stagger tool
