I've tried many others: Souls, Dragon's Dogma, older Elder Scroll games, Diablo, dungeon crawlers like Etrian Odyssey, CRPGs, etc etc. And while these are all fairly great games that triumph in certain departments where Skyrim falters, at the end of day none of them compete with the scale and level of ambition present in The Elder Scrolls V.
Put it simply, this is the only game that gives you THAT adventure feel. The one you can sense from reading novels such as LOTR, or contemplating a fantasy painting. So again, how is it possible that no one has surpassed it yet?
Name ONE better open world fantasy game where there is a living, breathing world to explore that is as much detailed as Skyrim. Name ONE such game with so many mods as Skyrim so you can tailor the experience to your needs. Name one more charismatic game director than Todd Howard.

>Souls, Dragon's Dogma, older Elder Scroll games, Diablo, dungeon crawlers like Etrian Odyssey, CRPGs, etc etc. Congratulations i know that this is bait but the disgust i feel in my soul makes me reply
I'm not ashamed to admit it but the actual answer for me is that I was only 15 when it released and I had very limited exposure to open world games, rpgs, fantasy as a whole, and I was strictly a console (xbox) gamer at the time. I hadn't even seen or read the lord of the rings movies when I played it. My main exposure to open world games before skyrim was skate 3 and my main exposure to similar rpg games before skyrim was fable 3 (which I dropped after a few hours). I mainly played shooters like halo, cod, and battlefield from 2007 - 2011 and before then was a nintendo gamer playing stuff like sonic, mario, pokemon, animal crossing, and so on. it was a formative game for me because I had so little exposure to other stuff. I bet people with tons of exposure to past fantasy work, rpg work, open world work before playing skyrim would have vastly different impressions of the game than I do. I accept that's true but I still love the game and I'm not sure if another will be able to replicate or go above what it offered to me. hoping for the best with tes6 though.
That's the thing, it's probably the most accessible fantasy game ever. I felt the same way too when it came out, but over time I started diving deeper into nerdier fantasy media and slowly distanced myself away from the game. I still boot it up from time to time for old time's sake or to try out mods though.
All those cool and muh "immersive" aspects are nothing if it executed poorly. It's something that only looks good and mindblowing back in 2011 but people get bored of it soon because eventually people realize it doesn't add anything valuable to the game.
I'm thinking on modding Skyrim for some final playthrough, I mean there must be some good combat mods at this point, hell even localized damage was mad fun some years ago

accessibility and good soundtrack i cried when i heard "journey's end" before closing my recent playthrough.
Soule is a genius and starfield will suffer without him.
William Cox
It's still relevant 11 years later. Sounds like the opposite of executed poorly to me.

It's just more brainless than others. You can shut off and just hold forward. I don't think it gives the sense of adventure it should personally, because the world just isn't interesting to interact with. I don't feel like I have any influence over the world, despite also feeling like the single most important thing in the game. It's strange and always creates a frustrating disconnect for me. BotW feels more like an adventure IMO.

todd can top it with tes6. I still believe
main stuff he's gotta focus on is making cities larger, questlines longer, combat less button mashy, and make the overworld strange again
Hudson Allen
It's simple, all would be competitors have failed to dethrone it
It's been 11 years since a proper TES, TES6 is going to sell like hot cakes off of that alone. People desperately want a new TES
Kevin Reed
It's an interesting time for open-world games, and especially TES, because their approach to simplifying everything and taking a mundane approach to the mechanics is massively outdated now and doesn't seem to be the trend. They have significant competition now, so they may well be required to make the world more important than the character.
Evan Green
Still not playing it.

and skyrim will be 15 years old when TES6 is released. given that they take 4 years with each game since their last game was 76 in 2018.
Consolefags will never enjoy Skyrim because they have no access to mods
Liam Johnson
It's not even the best TES game. But it is better than Oblivion. Elden Ring is a lot better too, especially if you like exploring and not just following marks on the UI.

>skyboxes are all clouds >entire game at night >every scene dominated by one color nice "variety" you've got there
Jonathan Garcia
Bethesda literally gave them mod support. They just struggle with mods that use script extenders
