Morrowind combat was good, better than later TES. It just didn't translate that well into the 3D environment because there was a lack of parry/dodge animations (Daggerfall had it).

Morrowind combat suffered from trying to fit mechanics that work in turn based games into real time.
It went as well as you would expect. It turned out so bad Bethesda scrapped the entire system and built a new one from the ground up for Oblivion
The Morrowind system was the fault of old time devs who were slaves to convention and lacked vision.
