I recently had to beat him without using the second controller port and that is the biggest pile of shit I've ever heard of.
The second controller port is the normal way you are meant to do the fight.
You call colonel enough and he outright tells you that.
Die a couple times without being able to do that and he then tells you to destroy the statues with masks on and he can't read you anymore.

Like that second solution should have been the norm and the other controller port an easter egg method.
