I could talk a walk outside and it'd look like Half-Life 2 for the most part, I don't see what's so appealing and "dark" about it aside from the few security drones and terminals that are in these almost completely normal environments

I don't know entirely what you mean by that, but a lot of HL2's areas show the effect the combine invasion/subjugation has had on the planet, which was done in a subtle way. For example, the combine have been draining earth of its water, which is shown in the massively receded water levels.

HL2 is massively overrated, but it's still good.
