That's just a theory. Patches also leads you to her saying some girl needs help. If anything, it could also be him trying to bait you to do his work by killing Boggart. He does do it again with Targoth where he immediately takes all the credit the moment you kill Targoth.

If you fight Dungeater at the moat before touching anything related to Blackguard or the Volcano Manor then Blackguard will live. Did that on my playthrough.
