The games are pretty separate from each other, but it helps a lot if you play them from the beginning because each one happens one after another. If you want to see the best of what the series has to offer, start with colony and see if you like it. Otherwise start with blight and go from there.

Yes. Disregard what the other retard said, they're all direct sequels that build off of the established characters, plot developments, and worldbuilding of the previous entries. Playing them out of order would be a terrible idea.

Agreed. Hence why the parts when Auris and Olivia return are some of the best parts in the game. Not to mention Versa showing up.
I kind of doubt the lack of returning characters like kludge had will be as extreme in future games though. The setting was what necessitated having that lack of returning characters in the first place.
