He probably discounted the grafted scion as not a real 'first death', because dying to it is kind of expected and plays a cutscene rather than the death screen. I, in fact, have not a clue what place he is referring to at the end. The chariots in the Fringefolk Hero's Grave have a fairly obvious safe spot that also doesn't troll you. More likely: He's just lying through his teeth the entire time.
It's just a dungeon trap. The chariot isn't even that horrible once you've figured it out.
