Is this a really small genre or do i just not know where to look?
Return of the obra dinn was great, Danganronpa 1 was fine story-wise but the gameplay was either meh or non-existent and Her story isn't a videogame
Also i dropped Tangle tower right after it's revealed that all the testimonies matched up and the girl was on a different plane or something because i'm very strict about the "murder" part of murder mistery
Murder mystery / Whodunnit

There are Sherlock Holmes games, which vary from just playing through the story to being able to pick the wrong answer (you will only do that if you didn't pay any attention)

DING DING DING DING
Dude there's this one flashback in this game of some guy getting blown up, and apparently it's actually two guys, but for the life of me I cannot see the second fucking guy.
Yeah the cannon one fucked me hard, tought the guy fell off the ship because of the blast but the game says he died by getting shot
>you will only do that if you didn't pay any attention
So it's easy? When it comes to stuff like this i'm always ready to push myself into full autismo and start taking notes and shit
Look over the scene for another guy dying some other way and use the watch
Hello user that's been my favorite genre in every form of media ever since I was a child.
Did you play Ace Attorney? It is by very, very far the absolute best game in that entire genre in terms of quality murder mystery writing. The games are based on the original Sherlock Holmes but I'd say that in terms of raw murder mystery writing and how fair it is put before the player, the game is better than Doyle's books.
Also, Danganshit doesn't hold a candle to Ace Attorney. Because it relies on withholding information from the player until is most convenient. Not like Ace Attorney doesn't do the same, but everything makes much more sense and you don't feel like they're withholding information that should have been brought up much earlier for sheer convenience.
>withholding information
I'd argue DR has the opposite issue, it gives the solution right away in every case that isn't 3-1 but then does everything it can to distract and steer the player away from the obvious for several hours until it circles back around to the solution.
but I can tell you haven't actually played the games in detail otherwise you'd know this is the biggest issue with DR cases, with the next one being god awful minigames like improved hangman's gambit.
He did, his corpse then flew out of the ship
You can hear very faintly how a noise gets quieter until it ends with a splash

>Attorney Online Vidya
It's Ace Attorney but multiplayer, in a Any Forums server. You run murder mystery cases in AA style. You can play not only as the defense as per traditional AA, but also as prosecution, judge, witness and of course as the real killer. Just beware it's not too active anymore. Link: aovidya.pw
>Ghost Trick
By the creator of Ace Attorney. It's not a whodunnit murder mystery, but it scratches the very same itch (and trust me on this I know exactly what itch it is), you'll be trying to figure out how you died and who keeps killing people.
>999/VLR/ZTD
This trilogy has an absolutely kino premise if you enjoy whodunnits. There are nine people locked inside a twistd game, and one of them is the mastermind who kidnapped the other eight. You've probably seen this a few times before but I guarantee no other form of media has ever managed to pull this setting remotely as well as 999's. And do absolutely start with 999, it is arguably the best in the series. The only reason this is not the ultimate whodunnit is because it thrives on information that should be obvious on a glance from your character's point of view, but 999 is not guilty of this, only VLR and ZTD
End of the list. As far as I am aware there are no other games that scratch this itch. Anons mentioned the Sherlock Holmes games but they are garbage imo. They are more similar to LA Noire, but without the cool action parts.
>recommending the entire trilogy of 999
user lets be honest,if it wasn't for Any Forums's memes there would've been no point for ZTD existing.
From what I remember the solution is obvious in some cases, but you need to slog through hours of dialogue as you wait for the other characters (and your own MC) to figure it out for themselves, while in other cases you're led by red herrings created by absolutely illogical and self-destructive actions practiced by some characters
The writing just doesn't hold a candle if you've played Ace Attorney before. And yes the minigames were very annoying too
>it gives the solution right away
OP here. I finished DR a couple of hours ago and i have to say it gets more plot twisty as the game progresses. The first case is obvious as hell if one has any sense of observation but from then onwards you either don't have any information that necessarily narrows down to one suspect or they give a seemingly obvious suspect just to swerve you at the end (Genocider shou's case for example)
Such a shame too since i really liked the initial premise
ZTD was very fun for me but I played it along with the rest of Any Forums and enjoyed the meme ride
Persona 4 is also this, but has a massive mix of other things, such as comedic slice of life, that you might not appreciate.
Are Shibuya Scramble and The Silver Case any good or do they not quite fit?
Ace Attorney
Ghost Trick
999
AI Somnium Files
Hotel Dusk
I've only played the first two, I always see the other ones get mentioned though so I assume they're good as well.
yeah thats what i mean, the idea of DR is great but god damn there's so much slogging due to the actions of the characters, i don't know why i played all 4 of the games, peer pressure i guess.
I was thinking more like the sequels, which are worse with this then the original, but your right about that i suppose yeah.
Shibuya is fantastic, not quite the same genre granted, but I'd recommend it if you love VN's
Your Turn To Die
Kara No Shojo
In order from most recommended to least recommended:
Ace Attorney (All 5 games, plus the two Gyakuten Kenji spin off series, and Dai Gyakuten Saiban series will keep you occupied for a while)
Danganronpa (3rd game is controversial)
999 (avoid the third game, it sucks. But you can play it if you're bored enough)
Raging Loop (ground hog day, creepy village atmosphere. It's pretty good)
Silver Case (not really a classic murder mystery, but its pretty unique)
Ouka Sabaki (kinda like Ace Attorney, but its Japanese indie)
Famicom Detective Club (kind of generic, but its alright as a time pass)
Umineko (It has detective tropes, but its not really meant to be a detective story which gets people like me really mad at it. You can save this for last if you're desperate)
As a bonus here is my anime recommendations that make you feel like you have 200 IQ
>Kaiji
The absolute king of high IQ anime. The protagonist is placed in a casino game that is rigged (either the others are cheating or the rules are just written so that the house is prone to win). Kaiji must find a way to win the game game nonetheless. The setting could have easily been ruined by bad writing (think of No Game No Life), but in Kaiji the solution to the games is actually fucking orgasmic. They are perfectly fair, are 100% logical, totally credible stuff.
>Akagi
By the same creator of Kaiji. It has pretty much the same premise, but he only plays Mahjong. You should learn the basics of Mahjong before watching this. It has better pacing than Kaiji but imo it's not as good as Kaiji because Akagi thrives on luck and asspulls, in this sense it's the opposite of Kaiji in which the solution is always 100% logical and fair.
>One Outs
It's similar to Kaiji and Akagi but with baseball. I put this off for years because I hate sports anime but holy shit don't ever think about not watching this just because it's baseball. This is similar to Kaiji in that the solution to the puzzle is logical and credible, but it doesn't do this as well as Kaiji (Kaiji is king in this regard).
>Death Note
Everyone and their mother watched this but honestly it has really good writing that you won't find in many other titles
Unfortunately no other decent high IQ anime exists. There are many simulacrums, like Kakegurui, but it's very rare to find one in which the writer went out of his way to write logical puzzles with fair solutions that don't rely on asspulls, luck or information withholding. Like, you can kill Kaiji's puzzles from the very first minute if you are smart enough (but realistically you won't do that, you'll take 20 episodes like everyone else), can't say the same about Kakegurui
>all 5 games
Which one didn't count in your opinion?
