If you want to see an indie game with some actual effort put into its art direction, take a look at Stories: The Path of Destinies or snake pass.
Everyone was under the impression games need to uphold a certain standard in every category up until pic related exposed the fact people are ready to pay for unfinished trash including eyesore programmer art, almost everything bad about indie games these days can be traced back to Minecraft

In a world were brands built a following so big they don't need gaudy symbols, devs think they can do the same. I don't mind, I prefer a enjoyable simple graphics game than a stunning game devoid of substance like Hellblade.
I don't know what is it about MC's characters models' extremely autistic aesthetic that makes me feel inexplicable rage and discomfort. It's like the moment I set my eyes upon one of the them the only thought that goes goes through my head is "I NEED to destroy that.".
