As time goes on, I think as a selling point for games it is a meme. This doesn't use raytracing and runs like butter for example, achieving the same intended result; realtime GI.

Not realtime GI, but my point is that you can achieve a lot of the same results as expensive raytracing by creating specific purpose built solutions.

Eg.) games duplicating your model in front of a mirror instead of raytracing the whole mirror

I'd agree with you if I didn't see just how bad VR games look first hand. It depends on the genre really. For example, 3D RPGs probably can't get away with a default Unity terrain environment for world building, would they? I don't care for fidelity, just if the atmosphere is pulled off well.

At the current point in time I see raytracing as a meme as the minimal performance increase it offers is nullified by the sheer hit it takes in game feel in the form of a chopped framerate.
