The devil is literally a snake. Dragons (serpents) are representations of evil in every Christian nation.
In Egypt the snake was the god that threatened Ra and represented chaos, disorder, and the end times.
In the pagan North the serpent was also affiliated with the end times and death of the gods.
Even in Mesoamerica where one of the more benevolent snake deities is found, they were still considered to be swallowers of souls and capable of denying you an afterlife, which is worse than death.
