This game crashed to desktop (xbox) the first time I left the doctors house. It crashed agains just leaving Prim. And it crashed many, many more times in the initial release.

I could not get it to work. It doesn't seem to like fomods. Also I kept running into problems with archiveinvalidation but once I switched back to FOMM it worked fine.

Well look I'm not a programmer, I just want to play modded new vegas. All I know is that I had a lot of trouble using MO2 but fomm works like I remember.

It was never hated. But journalists and a lot of people called it for what it was - a massive Fallout 3 mod. Over time, though, people realized it was better than Fallout 3 in pretty much every department so the "mod" status fell, the DLCs also helped with that.
Fallout 3 managed to hold its ground until 2012-2013, then it died and returned to be relevant after Fallout 4, but then died again, simply because New Vegas just looks too good compared to it.
