You kill things to level like standard RPGs. And each level up gives you a point to slot into your weapons/armor to increase your attributes. You can change these around freely at the start of any stage. So if you are losing at a stage, you can leave and reallocate more strength/defense if you need to.
Level 4 means I have 4 points to allocate. For now, I'm maxing out attack and balancing out defense and agility.
