>we will never get a game as crazy and arthouse as Drakengard again
Sucks man. Nier is good and all but you can tell Taro needs to pander to his popularity now, especially with square. I want to see the same crazy shit 1 had, with paedophiles, baby eaters, floating naked babies with human teeth, maddening disonant soundtrack and crazy MC's.
Shame that it can't happen in the modern day. Doubt we'd even get a remake.
Good user, shitpost more so I can get the thread going.
Ian Kelly
We've had plenty of crazier, weirder games before and since Drakengard.
You just don't care because they're not part of a franchise and aren't as focused on shock value.
Michael Ross
It's 100% true.
Alexander White
>We've had plenty of crazier, weirder games before and since Drakengard.
Post examples that had the same level of soundtrack and maddening dissonance. Silent Hill 1 is good but it's not quite the same, unless it's some sort of no name indie game I haven't heard off.
Henry Baker
>paedophiles, baby eaters, floating naked babies with human teeth, Holy shit, I only played the first level, it gets more batshit later on? I only played it because from all descriptions, Caim is my favourite type of mc.
Jonathan Williams
I love Taro's work, but these threads always read like some teenager trying to be edgy.
>YEAH GAMES NEED FUCKIN PEDOS >EATING BABIES SO DARK >YEAH MOM, THERE'S NUDITY IN MY GAME, SO WHAT? CALL THE NEWS!
Christopher Thomas
I mean I can elaborate, edgy shit is irrelevant without substance but the game does have that in spades, dealing with the types of people (like inuart for example) and making them sympathetic or the way it displays when the watchers come down with the reddish pink hellscape.
The art direction just feels so otherwordly. I like how it portrays characters most of modern society wouldn't give a second chance to try and understand.

Evergrace's OST is off the wall in similar ways. But yeah, you're changing the argument from "we'll never get a game as CRAZY and ARTHOUSE as this EVER AGAIN!" to "post games that do the same things Drakengard does."
Like, ARYOL Ugoku e and Cosmology of Kyoto were just as artsy (an even more unsettling in CoK's case). Games like Stretch Panic and Chulip eschewed norms harder than Drakengard did. El Shaddai and Ranko Tsukigime's Longest Day are art first, game second. The Missing - J J Macfield is arguably a more brutal subversive game than Drakengard. This is without getting into non Japanese games, let alone proper indie titles.
Drakengard isn't the pinnacle of atypical, artsy games. It's honestly kinda tame by those standards. It just slammed some Berserk into a project that was half Ace Combat, half Dynasty Warriors.

I mean yeah, valid point. I just wanted something to start a thread so we aren't drowned out in elden ring threads.
Thanks for the suggestions though user. Will look into them.
Ryder Garcia
>it gets more batshit later on? You've literally not even scratched the paint yet. And this glorious clusterfuck somehow directly leads up to NieR as well. Literally.
to his credit, yoko taro never denied he was a money hungry whore at the same time there is no combination of circumstances that would allow a game like drak1 to be made again, it was a complete freak occurance
Tyler Flores
>Evergrace's OST is off the wall in similar ways
Evergrace is okay but it's far too messy. Drakengard's chaotic meldeys work more for the game it's portraying, the siphoning of various classical works also helped it.
Like listening to Drakengard I feel like I am going insane but in a good way, Evergrace is like that except I'm bored out of my skull.
Logan Price
Yeah it gets more interesting later on but gameplay also get shittier too
Jose Allen
I really can't stand the gameplay, I've tried playing this like 3 times and get too bored. I might just cheat to rush through it cause I want to get to the crazy shit
Easton Brown
At least you aren't keeping up the charade. Trying to get people on the internet to talk about things with any level of detail is painful.
Please play Heart & Slash. It's not artsy I just like it.
Christopher Harris
>Heart & Slash
Maybe I should've contextualized what I meant though. Do you have anything with the same level of art direction and macbre setting as Drakengard?
I checked out Cosmology of Kyoto and that seemed right up my alley. I like stuff with strong visual art direction.
Samuel Anderson
>The Missing - J J Macfield I actually really liked that game, the idea of using your body parts for puzzles was neat. Shame you can't talk about it here
