My personal favorite is SMT1, but I think Strange Journey is the best one as a complete package and quality wise across the board.

I'd choose Nocturne all around, it does some things worse than other games but on balance it gets a lot right, and if you play one SMT game, you've played them all in my opinion

That version is fine. The original story is basically untouched (outside of like, maybe 5 minutes of new stuff if you ignore the new dungeon).

Of the ones I played, IVA had the best combat and fusion autism, but I still prefer Nocturne all around. Still waiting for V's PC port to make any judgement calls there.
