dark souls is successful because they managed to make an RPG that isnt tedious for the first time ever.

Dark Souls isn't an RPG though. The "role playing" it offers is minimal to nonexistent. Whether you choose knight, bandit, or wretch, it's has no meaningful impact on the "story."
There is no story, Dark Souls is just an action game with mumbling cryptic NPCs that YouTube trannies amuse themselves by making wikis about.

Having this be optional instead of npc dialogue explicitly telling you everything and boring the fuck out of you is a huge improvement.

Acceptable If it also doesn't have daily quests, loot boxes, microtransactions, pay to win, login bonuses, 3 different currencies (2 that are obtainable with real money), battle passes and timed events.

Good? Fuck no.
It's basically 6th soulsborne installment, the novelty of doomed, apocalyptic world full of tragic and bleak characters and places is seriously wearing of. Especially since ER is heavily front loaded with the good content. I'm thinking about quitting after experiencing dogshit level design of Deeproot Depths, Nokstella and Lake of Rot in a row, it already feels like a bigger chore than playing DAS2.

If you create an ARPG with very little to no emphasis on story, writing, dialogue and mission/quest design then you better make fucking sure the gameplay cycle of explore > fight > get stronger is 11/10 thorough the whole game.

Cope from drone. RPGs with emphasis on story will always be superior to your garbage ARPG hack and slash diablo clone.
Witcher series characters could have entire books written on them, because they were developed over a course of 8 books and 20 years, by a guy who isn't a hack like Vidya writers.
The story in ER is so barbone that even official wikis struggle to make shit up and characters end up with one paragraph describing their story/lore.

So if your character was slow as a snail and you had to find speed boots through some kind of quest relating to the gender identity of someone living in a cave then it's suddenly an RPG? You're all weirdos and this is why your genre is dead.
