RTW was balanced and fine tuned around normal battle difficulty and medium unit size.
It wasnt until years later when multiplayer community was playing with newer much more powerful computers at extra large unit size and very hard that the memes with general bodyguard units and poor morale units happened.

First change made by total realism mod was to increase the morale of all units across the board.

It's a misconception that the Triarii were the hardened back row to prevent the green troops ahead from fleeing. How romantic that view, how honourable.

Simple fact is they were older, more valuable, and richer. In that position of power, they are not taking the front line ahead of the dregs.
It's as simple then, as it is today.
