I just picked up picrel on Steam for 70% off. Never played before, but I hear it's got quite the cult following.
It's installing now. What should I know before I dive in?
I tried searching /vg/ but I guess there's no general for this.,

If you're going to be a melee character, use a controller, if you're going to be an archer, use a mouse, and if you're going to play a mage use a noose.
Is magic really not viable?
Oh it's very viable, it's just not fun.
Wolves hunt in packs
maybe I'm just retarded but using a keyboard to switch between bow and the other weapon and using the 6 abilities with 2 different activators is absolute fucking cancer
>What should I know before I dive in?
Nothing play as blind as possible. If you start to feel frustrated, it is because, and only because, you are not engaging with some mechanic.
If you run into that ONE bandit early game (you'll know who I'm talking about) who takes practically no damage from your hits: you're not doing it wrong, you're just not suppose to be there yet.
Don't try to minmax or it'll spoil your fun.
Pure magic classes aren't as engaging as other classes. Other classes get shields for perfect blocks, fast mobility skills, different combos with each weapon and martial skills are simply fun in this game.
1. Wolves hunt in packs
2. All roads lead to gran soren
3. The gran soren merchants items are masterworks all, you can't go wrong
4. Aught
tis weak to fire
If you play as a little girl, you can run under monsters legs and crawl thru tunnels
Thanks friends.
Regarding character creation, is there any character style/class/whatever that I should avoid on my first playthrough (besides mage). Or is everything pretty much balanced and viable?
pick longsword
spam jumping light attacks
pick underaged pawns
remove their cloths and grab them from behind and fap
You can swap classes at inns so just try them all, maybe you will enjoy the magic for it's visuals at least.
some aughtists might tell you trying out changing and trying out new classes will ruin your game (since if you level up with a certain class like mage, you'll get stats that are going to be worthless if you end up going warrior later on) but you don't have to worry about that too much, you can still easily beat the game
this
the beginning of the game isn't amazing. Things open up after the dreaded cart escort quest.
Just play it without spoilers, it's pretty easy and straightforward
its is but the mage vocation sucks, its better for pawns due to its support skills.
for good magic damage dealing you want to use a sorcerer or a magic archer.
It's fun and plays different
That's all that matters
You'll love it on your second playthrough in two years after you put this down tomorrow
