I disagree, there should be an escalating alert system, where alerting a guard causes them to search for you, but give up the search after a thorough check of the area (and have them actually move quickly during it, not slowly walk around). However after this the alert level of that guard is raised and alerting them again causes you to be noticed, and the alert level of all nearby guards increases slightly, resulting in you being noticed automatically if you alert too many individual guards.

A guard isn't going to go off by himself to hunt someone down, they're going to alert their friends and get help. And if they absolutely have to go by themselves for some reason, they're going to at least radio in or just shout to get their attention from a distance

That's why I said it should escalate, the first guard you find just checks to make sure he wasn't seeing things, the next one alerts nearby guards as well, and the next time you get the whole base on alert, then after that they just trip the alarm immediately.
