For me it's two Fighters and two Red Mages

I picked it for the design, along warrior, black and white mage.

It appeals to those that fall for the "good in the early game" meme.

in the original versions of the game the intelligence stat literally didn't work, making red mage as good as any other caster because most of the spells red mage can't use also don't work or just aren't worth it, and since he can use the silver sword he's a pretty good melee character early game too

he's definitely not worth it in the later versions that fix intelligence and give him less useful stuff to fight with though

backup healer with some offense. If WHM dies, it's good to have someone to heal you as you make your exit from the dungeon. If WHM is alive, still good at crowd control spells and buffs. I can't imagine playing through FFI without a RDM

red wizard is good endgame too though

Doesn't Intelligence not even work in FF1 so shouldn't Red and Black mage deal the same amount of damage with spells? Yeah, Black Mage gets better spells but by the end of the game you get items that can cast spells without actually using magic anyway and casting spells only matters if you live long enough to use them. I don't think FF1 has revive spells?

I like Red Mage. I usually pick Fighter, Black Belt, Red Mage, and White Mage

Thief is absolutely useless for like 90% of the game

in the versions with spell charges red mage literally does the same damage/healing as the other mages and thief is a weak bitch

Yes. Black Magic SUCKS in NES version, it's only useful for slimes. So you might as well pick the Red Mage for slime patrol, he can also heal and hit decently after that.

A Fighter with a decent weapon will do more damage just by attacking compared to the Black Mage casting NUKE.
