It has a lot to do with time spent. Dating Ariane has maybe 100 scenes total, while a half-good WEG has tens of thousands. Of course it's going to come out rougher.

That doesn't make much sense though. What we're talking about is character design, something you do before or insanely early into any game's development. Rendering that character in a billion different scenes and poses is probably insanely time-consuming if you want it to look somewhat human, but it isn't technically more work for the character designer.
