i've looked at local retailers, but i've never seen proof of the "prebuilts are actually cheaper than custom builds nowadays" meme. at best i've seen discount prebuilts selling for maybe 50 euros less than a comparable custom build, but then it comes with the pitfalls of having a shit case, non-standard mobo and trash psu.
I guess things might be different in muttmerica though.

But it's true in the sense that buying the prebuilt then scrapping the parts you didnt need was "profitable" IE cheaper than buying the, usually, GPU on its own.

Can you buy a pre-built with the specs you're looking for for cheaper than piece by piece? Than yes. I ended up buying a pre-built awhile back because I was able to sell my old PC right when one that I wanted went on sale. Only issue is the GPU was a blower style card, which I've always heard have had more issues. You can always swap out cases or redo cable management.
