AHHH I'm tired of all of you being wrong, this is the lore now stop schizoposting!

The Greater Will is an alien that made Marika into its avatar, using her to wage war against the various factions already existing upon the planet to further spread the influence of the Erdtree. The larger the territory of the Erdtree, the more people are marked by it. When these marked people die, the Erdtree absorbs their souls and allows those it deems useful to be reborn. Marika realised that the Erdtree is a sinister creature that feeds off those it deems unworthy and only spares those that can further it's influence in order to gain more territory/souls. The Erdtree was reaching the end of its lifespan, whereupon it would suck out all life from the Lands Between and once again spread out it's seeds throughout the galaxy to repeat the process. This is why she first tampered with the Elden Ring and took out the rune/concept of Death. By removing Death, the Erdtree's growth was stunted, there were less dead for it to feed upon. This gave her time to send away Godfrey and have more children that would help her wage war against The Greater Will. She encouraged Godfrey and his men to go out and wage war in order to harden themselves and give herself a standing army outside of the Greater Will's influence. At the same time she encouraged her followers to question the Golden Order, in hopes this would lessen the Greater Will's influence upon the people in the Lands Between.

She succeeded at having a child that would defy the Greater Will, however it backfired spectacularly. Ranni stole a FRAGMENT of the Rune of Death and used it to kill her body in order to break the influence the Greater Will and Two Fingers had upon her. The weapon she used to kill her body was taken away by Assassins in the service of the Two Fingers and were used to kill Godwyn in order to begin the process of mending the Elden Ring and returning Death to the Lands Between. They turned Marika's most splendid child, who had befriended dragons and was unsullied by other Outer Gods, into a soulless puppet. An eternal living manifestation of death, that would spread it among the Lands Between once more. This drove Marika to the brink; she lost her means of stalling the Erdtree for time. Since the Greater Will practically declared war upon her, she fought against Radagon (She had cast away the parts of herself most susceptible to Outer God influence in the same way Ranni destroyed her Empyrean body) and shattered the Elden Ring. The Erdtree sensed the danger this act posed and shot out countless seeds to act as their own failsafe should the main Erdtree fall. Marika was neutralised and sealed away by the Greater Will. While sealed away, all she could do was attempt to guide her children, who were unfortunately corrupted by other Gods and could not fulfill her wishes to break free of the Greater Will. So she turned her gaze to the kin of Godfrey, whom she had sent out to become her secret army against the Greater Will.

that makes sense now explain who the fuck melina is and what her entire flame of frenzy subplot has to do with the game

Who the fuck is Stephanie Smith

They did my man Radagon dirty by just making him the first phase of the final boss instead of his own fight

The Rune of Death was hidden away and the Greater Will couldn't get it back. That was how Marika betrayed Malekith. By twisting his purpose which was to help her enforce the Greater Will's agenda and turning him into the guard dog of the Rune of Death. But Ranni stealing a portion of it was enough for the Two Fingers to create a new Rune using the body of the demigod Godwyn as its mindless vessel. It wanted the Rune of Death back. It needed more people dying again for sustenance.

Why zoomies think outer gods means aliens?

She was a child of Marika and Radagan born during the time in which Marika was sealed inside the Erdtree. She did not inherit the Giants cursed red hair, but instead their affinity towards the frenzied flame. She is kindling sent out by Marika to allow the chosen Tarnished entry into the Erdtree. Her purpose was unknown to even she herself in order to prevent the Greater Will from stopping her.

The chick who emailed me this lore, I messed up copy pasting

kek wheres that schizo now who keeps saying marika killed godwyn

The elden beast was literally sent down from space in the form of a shooting star. Look into what the stars are and do Ranni questline etc you will see that The Lands Between are constantly being invaded by aliens/outer gods.

Marika fucking lost it when the one child she had that was forging alliances with the ancient enemies of the Greater Will, ie the dragons was turned into basically a second, weaker Rune of Death. The mending rune of death was grown upon him for the express purpose of restoring the Elden Ring back to its full power and resuming the harvesting of souls. This is why the roots of the Erdtree look so horrifying. The agonised tortured souls of its thralls are being slowly consumed by it.

what is the flame of frenzy (or shabriri on that matter) and why is it so bad that melina leaves you and vows to kill you at the ending, meanwhile she doesnt throw a shit fit over the other relatively worse ending (the dung eater one or even ranni's ending that implies the moon god takes over the status quo or whatever)

Alternatively she may be a remembrance of Ranni that Marika impregnated herself with. Melina called herself burned and body less, and whose charred dead corpse do we find atop a tower? She is an incomplete vestige of the original Ranni, the only other of Marika's children that had the will to rebel against the Greater Will. She would be more predisposed to killing herself to accomplish what she sets out to do.

>The Erdtree was reaching the end of its lifespan, whereupon it would suck out all life from the Lands Between and once again spread out it's seeds throughout the galaxy to repeat the process.
nice fanfic

The flame of frenzy is a chaotic outer god so she's fucking mad that the tool she was meant to use to save the world from the outer gods gets used in a way that just fucks everything up even more. You took her purpose as the kindling maiden from her.

Makes sense, but
1. How did Marika betray Maliketh?
2. Why does Marika want the Tarnished to "struggle, into eternity"?

Also, while the narrative that Marika fought against the Greater Will makes sense, there's little hard evidence for it.

Hey! Nice thread, thanks for your input! It sure was interesting read.

We literally have evidence of the Erdtree sucking up the souls of the dead, spreading its seeds when threatened with destruction and we see how the Elden Beast left Marika a crumbling barren husk once she no longer served its purpose. The Greater Will spreading its seeds through the cosmos is how it came to the Lands Between. Its a cosmic parasite that manipulates its golden-eyed thralls into slaughtering anyone that isn't under its influence. Its a parasite.

>the game directly says Ranni orchestrated the night of the black knives
>people write paragraphs of fanfic to change it so their waifu is pure
Mental illness.

If this is true why does Gideon claim Marika wants us to "struggle" for eternity/keeping the status quo which is contradictory to what you are saying.

Do you have single fact to back up
>The Erdtree was reaching the end of its lifespan
>whereupon it would suck out all life from the Lands Between and once again spread out it's seeds throughout the galaxy to repeat the process.
either of these claims

>Dark Souls hardcore nerd is decent looking IRL

Imagine my surprise, I thought he'd be a maidenless incel.

the game drops countless hints that it wasn't as simple as it seems

Maliketh was created by the Greater Will to serve her in enforcing the Golden Order. Remember what happened to Blayddh when Ranni turned against the two fingers? Marika twisted Maliketh into something he was never meant to be by making him guard the rune of death. He was left to suffer for an eternity, struggling against his true nature, all for a goddess who had seemingly abandoned him.

he's a turbomanlet

she orchestrated the plot. shit went haywire obviously otherwise rykard would have dueled malekith with the item he gave bernahl

Marika didn't want that, it's what Gideon thinks she wants. Everything she's done has been to destroy the Greater Will's hold upon the world and undo her past mistakes.

Ranni did orchestrate a portion of it, namely her own demise. What was done with the dagger afterwards wasn't something she was concerned with as she was setting her own plan in motion to begin the age of stars.

>Marika didn't want that, it's what Gideon thinks she wants
Weak explanation. You cannot just ignore a line that's supposed to be an essential reveal, because it doesn't fit your narrative.

What exactly is the Erdtree?

Is this thing of earthly origin?

Why are the Tarnish deemed unworthy of the title Elden Lord by Morgoth ?

What could have frightened Sir Godeon in Marika's mind

Then why did Gideon wait for the last second until you've claimed all the powerful runes to stop you? He's helped us along the way with information regarding the runebearers, also he claims their goal is to become elden lord, only to do a 180 at the last second, what influenced this change?

Go look up what Gideon looks like without his helmet. His eyes are golden. He was taken over by the Greater Will in order to ensure the Tarnished never succeed. What better tool than the self-proclaimed all knowing senior who exertd the most influence in the Roundtable hold?

Black Knife Assassins murder Iji, a person Ranni held most dear
It's obvious that assassins themselves are not controlled by her. They are guided by the Greater Will.

>What exactly is the Erdtree?
A manifestation of the Greater Will. It absorbs the souls of dead after their demise and may feed off them.
>Is this thing of earthly origin?
Definitely not, there was an age before it.
>Why are the Tarnish deemed unworthy of the title Elden Lord by Morgoth ?
Morgoth is a follower of the Erdtree, the Tarnished literally burns it. Also, the demigods all despise the idea a lowly Tarnished becomes Elden Lord over them.
>What could have frightened Sir Godeon in Marika's mind
She doesn't actually want the Tarnished to succeed. But the exact meaning isn't clear yet.

>They are guided by the Greater Will.
not by marika? and why would it half-kill godwyn?

OK then why are there minor Erdtrees and why are they guarded and why are the roots filled with corpses genius

The game talks about how the Golden Order over the years incorporates and absorbs groups it once deemed enemies. The Raya Academy and Black Knives are examples. At the time it says they worked from Nokron the Eternal City. The Golden Order has seen absorbed them and now they work for the Greater Will. They haven't always.

erdtree a damn symbiotic parasite with mind powers

Didn't you read? He was turned into a mindless puppet, and used to grow the death mending rune that restored death. The Elden Ring wanted to be complete again and for people to die so it can eat them.
