The idea behind it is that there's a forward force of massed tanks that essentially overwhelm immediate resistance and punch through their defenses, and then a second force of combined tank/infantry sweeps up the remnants and is able to establish a better position.

The flaw with this plan is that the US has been anticipating this strategy for 70 odd years and spent the better part of those years developing anti tank measures, measures that have been updated into the 21st century, while russia's military is still mostly stuck in the 90s.

Tanks are totally obsolete but most militaries have huge arsenals of them and the military industrial complex would suffer huge profit loss if armies abandoned them in favour of LAVs, gunships, and Self Propelled Artillery so everyone pretends like the tank still has any sort of relevance when they've been irrelevant since the 1970s. In any real war between competent powers tank losses would be astronomical. Yes, even for the USA. Missiles will always beat tanks, for far less money both in material and training.

The US totally lost (damaged beyond repair) 80 Abrams tanks during the Iraq War/Occupation and that was just to insurgents using ancient artillery shell IEDs and primitive RPG rockets. It takes nearly 9 million dollars to make a single Abrams tank, so the US lost 720,000,000USD worth to equipment that MIGHT have cost 1,000,000-2,000,000 total.
