It excels in presentation by virtue of having a higher budget and being on a more modern platform than the original PSP, and in gameplay by being able to (mostly) correct the weaknesses of the previous two entries. And it has the most post-game content thanks to that school mode + RPG.
But even if you were to completely ignore the divisive final trial (which aside from "HA HA FUNNY SEESAW" is all anyone ever seems to want to fucking talk about in this game), it's by far the weakest game in terms of story and characters. And if we do want to talk about the meta commentary shit, they already played that hand in SDR2, so it was pointless to do it again. Not to mention that the layout of the cases is the exact same structure as it's been in both previous games. It just makes it look like the team could only write one story.
And also fuck that you can't play as Kaede in the Salmon Run mode, so you have to skip through a section of Chapter 1 ten times to collect all of her FTEs. That's awful game design, especially because this was a problem in the original PSP version of DR1 that was fixed by adding Island Mode in SDR2.
The only thing I disagree with in terms of common complaints is that V3 retroactively ruins the Hopes Peak games. Danganronpa 3 did that.

I agree with the story being incredibly similar and think 3-5 is one of the worst cases in the series because you can tell how badly it wants to be 2-5, a case that earned its payoff much more naturally and was completely different from DR1's case 5.
