He used to be great. Supported the main cast and got shit done, could kick ass if the cards were down.
Now though, he's written as a sniveling coward that exists only to be rescued and provide exposition.

Real fucking shame. He used to actually be cool.

Half and half. There's already the issue that Tails is either Sonic that can fly or the worst part of the game. But there's also the fact that Sonic can never lose because Ken Penders is the ghost that will haunt the series for eternity. So Tails can only every be Sonic's cheerleader. Forever. He can never branch out on his own or exist outside of Sonic's shadow. Which is why Tails bitched out on a weaker version of an enemy he defeated before in Forces. Because it makes Sonic look better at his expense.

Tails could be cool. But games and levels would have to be built around him to display his strengths. And Sega hasn't even figured out how to make their main character popular again

He's okay, the problem with the Sonic main cast is that Knuckles is much more compelling than the rest.

They should have made him more badass.
Making him as a bishounen was a mistake.
