The helm's high defense meant I was still using it dozens of hours into the game, so much so it almost became my character's identifiable look as if I was an NPC. That's cool. Souls games don't really offer you the possibility to roleplay a backstory like other more classic RPGs do, but imagining my Tarnished as a disgraced Carian noble made going through Raya Lucaria and Carian Manor cooler.

I wouldn't say "almost". Have you seen the world? All the slaves and people forced to excavate the fallen ruins and shit like that are all former nobles since that is the gear they drop when killed.
