Tifa comes from the Italian word “tifare”, which means “to root for”. As you may know, Cloud, Barret and Aeris were the original playable characters. Tifa was meant to be an NPC that “cheered on” Avalanche between missions. That’s where her name comes from.

Either way, Tifa was never meant to be Asian.
