Nvidia has a lot of sway in the gaming industry. They're gonna want to see this goal through. If they're willing to spend $40 billion to buy ARM, imagine how much they're willing to pay developers to make their games RT only.

If you remember how many game devs made their games Epic Games Store-exclusive even at the expense of customers, it's only logical to expect them to take that Nvidia RTX-only paycheck.

Only PCs can handle ray tracing only games. Consoles still hold too much power. Over half of all video game consumers use consoles, and a large chunk of them use the fucking Switch. You think the Switch can handle ray tracing? Or, hell, the alleged "Switch 2"? Never in a million billion trillion years.

This doesn't make sense, if Tim wants most games to be made in Unreal Engine that just means it's gonna support everything by default. Also If the game is "top tier" then it can have a dedicated computer rendering the lightning that's gonna be put on the "legacy lightning" version anyway, if you can generate it easily in real time then it should be faster for even indie level devs to render non-ray traced lightning too.

The problem is that rtx is not a "effect", it quite literally replaces every post-processing there is besides AA and the faggy ones like motion blur or chromatic aberration. A future with ray-traced only games makes sense, just probably not until even toasters can do it just like they can render a 3D model at high resolution. At that point it's probably gonna become like the division between 32bit and 64 bit CPU and GPU manufacturers will have to create code designed for retro-compatibility, this doesn't sound like anything that can happen even in 20 years, it barely sounds feasible on 50.

It's actually more time-consuming to bake the lighting for non-RT GPUs because they can't do indirect/bounced lighting in realtime without the help of workarounds.
