I will say JRPGs usually have better written villians. Western games go WAY overboard with "omg so melodramatically evil!" bullshit. Raping grandma, murdering children in the streets, using taxes for hookers and blow, kicking their dogs, just stupid shit that would never happen. It's completely unrealistic. JRPG villains tend to leave you feeling a moral dilemma because you kind of agree with the villain half the time.

Here are a few:

1. The Japanese have always relied on aesthetics for narratives instead of learning how to convey ideas through language. In calligraphy classes, children are taught the form of kanji over function, despite its multitudinous usage cases.

2. Localization efforts are very clerical for Asian languages due to the ass-backwards grammar and general ambiguity present in many of them. Remember, the Japanese are extremely conservative, and so they dislike taking creative liberties and would regularly chew out EN localizers back in the day for going off the script... If they even gave them a script. That's how Ghost Stories got such a godlike dub.

3. Reliance on tropes. Whereas American games pride themselves on subverting the viewer's expectation, Japanese games wish to fulfill them. That is why LNs so intrinsically use isekai plots as far back as their inception. FALCOM is a great example of how this admittedly amateurish practice can bolster worldbuilding; make it easier to create a memorable ensemble cast; and engage players through a sincere and easy-to-parse plot.

4. Western assumptions about Japanese literacy. "The Tale of Genji" is not nearly as ubiquitous as we think it is. "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" is really only taught in bits and pieces, much like the Shinto religion. JP people like Oda Nobunaga the same way we romanticize Teddy Roosevelt or Genghis Khan (or, more fittingly, Lu Bu!). We like to think that salarymen only play mobage and dating sims because of the drudgery of work, but it really is because they prefer those games and do not wish to challenge themselves very much.

Silent hill quite literally shits on 99% of western game stories. Why can't the west write something at least above some shlock horror?

Thus it's a good storytelling medium but it takes skill and coordination to pull off effectively and is therefore rarer. You wouldn't say a diamond is a shit gem just because it's harder to obtain.
