One is a bad game and bad remake which is almost a parody of what a remake of FF7 would be in the 2000s.
One is a mediocre game but with beautiful vistas, music and a world where you want to live in until you have to play the story parts.

FF7 is a bad game for today standards and aged like shit compared to Tales of Eternia, Chrono Cross and other japanese rpgs of the era.
FF7:R failed in updating the only thing that they should have fixed which is the gameplay and made the story reamained like the original, update maybe a bit here and there, but this full remake is just horrible.

VII's "remake" isn't actually a remake, for one. It's a stealth sequel with all the ridiculous insanity you could expect from a "compilation" title. It stretches the lore to the very limit in a very bad way. Fucking time jannies, you seriously consider FUCKING TIME JANNIES to be "masterpiece" worthy? I have to ask what's wrong with you.
On a mechanical level, disregarding the fact that SE once against chose to turn FF into an action game and has been historically awful with FF action games, the game has so much padding it's ridiculous. I know it's a meme, but it really is true. They took the first two or three hours of the game and stretched it out into a full title, and it shows.
What you're missing from playing the original is a complete game with a complete story with pacing that isn't dogshit.

I played it when it released and I never touched it again, FF7 is simply too overated compared to the games of the same time and contemporary titles, even the story, the most important aspect of a jRPG of that era, is completely shallow, non-dramatic in a story sense and dull.
