Only when I'm playing smash with a bunch of friends and want one of the worse players to have one of my pro controllers so they can stand a chance. In those times I've played smash/mario kart with a joycon in each hand opposed to the controller holder thing for them.
Sometimes I use my switch in handheld mode if my room mate is watching something in the living room or if I want to lay in bed and play. Other wise it's one of my 3 pro controllers (real 1st party one/bootleg 1st party one/or PowerA)

Nah, I have a Pro Controller and 99% of the time I'm playing docked. If I'm in bed, sometimes I'll use the JoyCons under my covers while I prop my Switch up against my cat or a pillow.

I used the joycons for the first couple of months after the Switch came out, I found them to be pretty comfortable.
However, after getting a Pro Controller I fully switched to it and haven't looked back.

My joycons have been drifting on occasion, but more than that the left joycon is constantly disconnecting randomly. I don’t want to shell out the money for a pro controller, is there a cheaper alternative that would suffice?

There's the Hori one but it's wired only.
