This was the most marketed Souls game ever. That's why. They even got the super popular guy at the time of development starting, Mr. Game of Thrones himself, to write a few lines so they could slap his name on it. That's why.

Everyone knew exactly what gameplay they'd be getting. But the constant barrage of hype from Bamco's marketing team easily made it a FOMO game where you had to be excited and get it day 1 or not be one of the cool kids.
