Why is one of these more controversial than the other?

I don't see a problem.

Mario Kart is a racing game because it follows the genres rules. Smash isn't a fighting game because it doesn't. Ez

It comes down to two things, I guess.
One is items. I would argue items in smash change the way you play and alters your moveset, whereas Mario kart items are either "press a to launch projectile" or "set it and forget it" type abilities. The core racing mechanics are left intact.
Two is multiplayer. Going beyond 1v1 is just not very common in the traditional fighter scene and it means luck and random chance are more likely to contribute to a win or a loss.
Personally I think smash is a fighting game but is packaged as a party game for mass appeal, which is fine.

I fail to see your logic

Love mario kart, but also fuck mario kart

"Party game" has always been the biggest cope. It's not a genre unless you're talking about shit like Jackbox. Imagine saying Rock Band isn't a rhythm game because it's a "party game".

I dunno, I think "party game" kind of carries the qualifier that the game mechanics have been simplified or streamlined in some way to enable more accessible multiplayer.
To take your Rock Band example, I imagine the series wouldn't have been nearly as popular if the guitars functioned more like Rocksmith, or you were forced to sing in the same octave as the original vocal tracks. I think it's a rhythm game, sure, but party game isn't entirely off base either IMO

It's just fighting game autists who refuse to let their genre evolve, while at the same time they complain about how games die after a month or a few weeks.

>racing game
he who finishes the finish line first gets first place
>fighting game
he who reduces his opponent's health bar to 0 first is the victor
>smash
he who throws their opponent off the ledge and make sure that they enter the "blast zone" X amount of times first is the victor
Do you follow?

>It's just fighting game autists who refuse to let their genre evolve
>Smash
>the evolution of the fighting game genre
Please go to a forest somewhere and never be heard from again

>health bar to zero
your double standards will always be amusing, redditor.

Arguments like this are the most braindead waste of time. Smash is Smash, Street fighter is Streetfighter, ect. What ever catatagory its in does not change anything and only autistic retards will nothing else better to do care.

So reducing opponents health makes fighting game?

>hurr durr stamina mode
still not a fighting game

FGCfags are more autistic than racingfags. Simple as.

If the point of the game is to race, it's a racing game.

If the point of the game is to fight, it's a fighting game.

Anything else is just genres and categories people chose to follow due to devs copying each other.

>bro people should let the genre evolve by making it like smash
>game like smash comes out
>it dies in under a week

Both are party games. Racing games can be party games. Fighting games can't (outside of Tekken)

>persona is a fighting game
>tetris attack is a fighting game

Party games have a particular form of gameplay, usually focusing on a series of minigames than one "core" gameplay if you will. Good examples would be Warioware or Mario Party.

>smash dying under a week
Are you living under a rock? Just because people don't make threads about it doesn't mean people aren't playing it

Turn based fighting game and puzzle based fighting game, yeah. Street fighter and Smash are both realtime fighting games

So is Fortnite a fighting game, since the only objective is to reduce hp of every enemy to 0? How about Shadow of the Colossus? SotC is ONLY about 1v1 fights where you need to kill your enemy before he kills you.

its not because of stamina mode, its because its in fact a fighting video game

you can cope now, you can say "then call of duty is a fighting game" to try and be clever, you'll still be wrong

>fortnite
shooting game, your primary weapons are guns
>SoTC
If it was multiplayer, yes. but it's not

you just implies every fps is also a fighting game retard, do you actually put any thought into your opinions?

>IT'S A FIGHTING GAME BECAUSE... IT JUST IS, OKAY???

no, especially not on Any Forums

the smash and mario kart argument really does break the redditor

It is. There's nothing you can do to change that. Your karma has no power here, redditor.
