What is it about Silent Hill that mogs every single other horror game ever made?
How did Team Silent basically invent and also perfect the genre of modern horror games to the point where everything after their fall (circa 2005) feels bland and uninspired by comparison?

the right people in the right place at the right time. that's why modern re-creations of classic surival horror games feel so hollow. you simply can't just copy&paste gameplay, enviroments and music and expect it to work. it lacks the soul.

Mount the ISOs of 2 & 3, and then run their installers like always.
DON'T use W10's own virtual disc app! It will not work.
Don't install under C:\Program Files\ ! This will cause issues.
For SH2, Follow the Enhanced Edition homesite's instructions to the T, and you should be fine.
If you're mega lazy, just unpack the "Bare Essentials" to the game's folder, and you're done! The "Enhanced .EXE" is also the no-CD crack.
For 3 & 4, check the Guide or PC Gaming Wiki.
The SH1 is a PS1 rip that you gotta emulate.
I recommend the DuckStation, but most emulators work OK as well.

-Play in the release order.
-Start with Normal difficulty! Don't do hard on 1st run (espec. SH2).
-Replaying them all is recommended; tons of replay value.
-Turn down the ingame Brightness setting, for better gamma & colors!
-Leg it, or sneak! No need to kill everything.
-Turning OFF the flashlight can really help w/ stealth!

Yeah I feel like "just making classic Silent Hill but with modern graphics" simply wouldn't capture the lightning-in-a-bottle effect that the original series had.

I've only played the HD versions.
They were decent games, looked really nice for PS2 games but I can't see why people hold them up as the pinnacle of horror video games.
RE5 is scarier.

Being great horror isn't necessarily because it's the scariest. Atmosphere, tone and themes play a huge part, and in that regard SH is king.

Silent Hill Origins is the true SH4.

I mean, it's got the usual PS1 jank and simplicity, but it's immensely atmospheric. It's a short game, may as well play it if you can. It's not a big investment.

They wanted to create something new with every entry. When it didn't pan out just once with 4 (that already had severe time and resource constraints because Konami wanted a conveyor belt of Silent Hills) it got canned.
