I vaguely remember this crap. I had no idea what it was about then and I still don't. What shit were they doing, and how was real money involved?

Valve figured that gacha is more money making if people can sell their gacha shit to other players.
Then break their lootbox shit and crashes the playerbase economy.

Most TF2 crates have a chance (around 1%) to give an Unusual hat, which is a cosmetic from the crate with one of many particle effects attached to it. Being fairly rare, they can fetch a decent price depending on the cosmetic and the effect it comes with.

An update on July of that year fucked up the Unusual rate on certain older crates, causing them to unbox an Unusual cosmetic every time. Thus, the prices of Unusuals tanked in price because people were getting hats that fetch up for hundreds for $2.49.

but why was ever that much of a a demand for hats with particle effects in the first place
