It's an easy big picture vs little picture contrast. Glorious victory looks great until someone takes a look at the amount of bodies you have to climb to actually get there. Little Timmy didn't deserve to have mommy firebombed because she had the audacity of living in a strategic location. Richard probably wanted to do something else but he just happened to not die for 16 years there for it's time for him to march. There's the special kind of horror of having an entire population being told that those people over there are a moral evil that must die at all costs and that their lives must be used to retain their sanctity of life just for the end result for their leaders to talk out a solution amidst the fighting and you realize that you fought and died for political machinations and that those guys over there weren't the actual devil after all. War brings out the most base, extreme emotions in people which is why it's frequently used in narratives. But no one wants to actually be responsible for the extreme levels of death it causes.
