Huge amount of big mods ask for donations and have patreons and what not and receive tons of donation money.
The mods are free, but the community is still putting money to support projects which steers work fo sure.

Donating to modders is nothing new. Setting up a paywall for your mods was the controversy back then. This was posted when modders started charging for the mods they had up for free already.

I always explain it to people like this; everyone alive today is part of the grind generation. Boomers, zoomers, millenials, gen x. We're all wading knee high in shit together. We're at the point for humanity to where there's literally nothing to do, everything's been explored here on earth (no some ocean trench with creepy fish doesn't count). But this is also the most important time, we're grinding out trying to advance technology slowly but surely. You and I and everyone else reading this thread will NEVER see things like deep space travel or cool machines that make it so none of us have to work ever again, our job is being the bugmen that reach that point without any hiccups.

Our job is essentially to keep things stable and catch up the boring sectors to create a stable foundation for the future where people actually do get to enjoy these things. Whenever I see filthy fucking communists and socialists they're basically a festering rot that spreads to the rest of the foundation setting humanity back another hundred years or some shit. Instead of building and creation all they want to do is take from others out of selfish desire. There is no virtue in it, yet they proclaim themselves to be the most virtuous of all how could they not be? They're for the "working class" after all. Until the working class has an opinion on something anyway.

you cant steer workload purely by direct monetary outcome, there are a lot of factors that dont result in immediate turnover that are still worth investing in because of the long term prospects, or maintenance of a brand, public image, a healthy community environment, etc

this is perfectly exemplified by the paid mods shit this was a comment on, valve wasnt willing to put in any effort to the system, they just wanted to collect rent on every mod download by monopolizing the mod ecosystem by placing their own proprietary system at the forefront by attaching it directly to the software used to download and manage the games themselves
by making their option them most convenient by having direct access to the software that their competitors dont, they inherently get a lions share of the market by default, and therefore can do whatever they fucking want to it, minimizing the amount of work they have to put into maintaining the system (via curation, moderation or otherwise) and creating yet another cashflow source for them at the cost of the havoc it wreaks on the modding communities as a whole, which they clearly did not give a single solitary fuck about, and was the core of the issues that people had to begin with

On a more serious note most mods are crap, some of them are good, some of them are so good that require a lot of time to make. I like giving back to people that make good stuff for me because i feel bad if i don't.
Same thing with Linux and opensource programs, they don't survive on love they survive on donations and possibly paywalls for the binary(see Aseprite)
