I actually can better visualize images in my head when I'm staring off into nothing than when I'm actively closing my eyes. Is that weird?

I think people that claim to be a 5 are not understanding what visualizing something means. If you couldn't visualize what things look like then you couldn't have any memories. That means you wouldn't be able to recognize people you knew because you couldn't remember what their face looked like after they were out of your view. But I'm sure if you asked a person that claimed to be a 5 to think of their mother or father they would be able to visualize their face.

I literally get my ideas from dreams. I can only vividly see things when I'm dreaming and this translates into my artwork. I can't imagine be able to perfectly see an apple in my mind's eye, let alone an entire world. You people are lucky.

maybe they misunderstand actually seeing the apple in front of them with their eyes instead of reclusing into your brain and imagining the apple then see it like a memory for a fraction of a second, if you want to rotate it its more a low fps chaining of still images

The people who claim to be a 5 are probably misunderstanding the difference between visualization and observation. An image can exist in your brain without being directly and currently supplied by your eyes, but they probably think it has to be the eyes doing the work instead of the brain. And so they reach the conclusion "how could I visualize (read:observe) something that isn't actually within my eyes' field of view?"

Yeah that makes sense. They probably think that visualizing something is the same as hallucinating.

I can't imagine an apple in my head like in the picture, i.e. in a void with just the apple.
But I can imagine an apple if I connect it to a memory, even a fake one, e.g. some occasion I held an apple. I can then hold it in my hand, feel the weight, smell it, bite it, feel the juice, etc., but I can't imagine just an apple without anything else.
