Just got my first and only C&D e-mail from my ISP after a decade of on-and-off game pirating. I'm honestly flabbergasted that they didn't send one sooner and thought they just didn't care. Guess it means I'll have stop torrenting for a while, but at least I can still do direct downloads to get my fix. Too much of a poorfag to get a VPN unfortunately, and a lot of the free ones out there are pretty untrustworthy. Worst that could happen is my internet service gets suspended and I'll just go shopping for a new one anyway.

Thanks for reading my blog, Any Forums. Also, game piracy thread.

Is it true direct downloads won't let ISP's send you letters?

ive been direct downloading old game ISO's and porn for years and never got anything

ISPs really only care about people uploading. Most probably won't give a shit if you direct download. But if you get a torrent and seed it, they'll probably take notice.

>Got email
Lucky you, I got an IRL letter

Holy shit, what did you dl?

They would literally have to send me a letter, I never check this shit. I’m employed, I text or call people I wanna talk to, and I don’t care about whatever sales are going on at GameStop or bestbuy or whatever dumb shit they send. I don’t even see the point in ever checking my email.

OP here, now that you mention it I do think the reason I got the C&D is because I left my torrents on seeding for a bit too long, and that's what likely tipped them off. So yeah, if you want to avoid getting those dumb scare letters just don't seed your torrents (it's scummy I know, but sometimes you just gotta do it to em). I'm taking it a step further and just avoiding torrenting altogether for a while though since they're probably watching me for it now.

That's not it. They can see you in the peer list and if you 100% dl it, you just happened to dl something that has an automated lawyer response.

ISPs don't just see increased traffic when you torrent—seeding or otherwise—they can see the names of the files too. It's a simple matter from there to search for keywords and send out C&Ds, especially following releases of popular media. Maybe there are private trackers out there that get around this but if so you're not going to find out about them or get an invite here.

ISPs don't care, they only send you something after they are contacted by a lawyer. As long as you don't use a peer to peer service the lawyers won't be able to get your information.

No ISP I know of does jack shit out of their own initiative. This is done by specialist agencies (paid by the companies), that monitor which IP addresses are downloading torrents they're watching, and then send the letter to the corresponding ISP which relays it to the client. It should say who are they representing in the letter.

it's the seeding that fucks you desu, but yeah DDL as far as i understand is "safer" because you aren't seeding it

Let me guess, Colorado?

>it's the seeding
It's not.

>he's not on GGn

Why guess that?

I always thought direct downloads weren't pursued because of plausible deniability. Like you could say you "accidentally" clicked a link and the file just started downloading or you thought you were downloading a funny picture or you're an old fuck just clicking on shit, whereas you have to go out of your way to torrent by using a client and are also participating in promoting "theft" by seeding as well.

That's just what I assumed. I have no idea if that's actually why direct downloads are fine.

Several people have already explained this in this thread.

Almost all Direct Downloads are encrypted through https with mega being encrypted even further. Its also the fact that your not connected to a peer-to-peer network when downloading so there is no way of copyright holders knowing anything. There is nothing to pursue.

>many moons ago when i was a teenager
>pirating psp games and pc games via torrents
>fine for months
>one day a letter from ISP arrives
>its a warning about torrenting shit, specifically episodes of that show "Heroes"
>never DL'd that in my life but definitely torrented games
>dad knows jack shit about computer
>reads the letter and genuinely thinks I hacked into the FBI database
>tells other people this as if he was proud and I was super smart
>also tells me to stop so we don't go to jail or some shit

My dad was very chill and actually pretty smart but anything he didn't grow up with was completely lost to him so he never learned how to use a computer past the "grandpa" level. I had to disable and clean so much useless shit off the family computer because he'd just click on whatever and believe anything it told him in pop-ups. He also thought he turned off the wifi but actually just reset the password so I could still browse the internet on my PSP. PSP was a pretty based teenager device. Everyone used them for porn before smart phones were common. Having shitloads emulators was tight too.

what’d you pirate that caused your isp to shriek?
