Shin Megami Tensei V

I honestly liked it even if it wasn't close to being the best megami tensei game, I think the shitty story was a product of it's shitty development and the glimpses of greatness this game shows in it's music,a fully explorative environment,some of doi's art pieces for this game and some gameplay changes make it seem like the future is bright as long as they don't go through hell again like this game

they made the story shitty on purpose to appease Nocturne babies. Thankfully, its a one and done. They'll be back to prioritizing story and characters after they get their heads out of their asses

I think they had some great characters in this installment
In all seriousness I don't really care about the "explorable environment", it was pretty lacking to begin with. Story of course really suffered but I actually liked how the route chocies were simplified (your alignment choices, however shittily they were presented to you, was only on one axis and you could choose either axis or neutral at the point of no return regardless)
The demon choice could have been more expanded too, however I was able to get all the fusion autism I needed with what I was given which is important

it's more so not how smt v handled it's environments but the idea of making a fully explorable SMT game, imagine the tokyo of shin megami tensei iv in a fully explorable 3d environment. that would be fuckin awesome

In agreement there, it was a cool direction to push the franchise in. Even though it was literal rubble it was nice to be able to run around like Sonic while fighting demons like usual
The dungeons __really__ suffered though, and I'm not sure if it's because the PC can run at the speed of sound and outpace basically every enemy. I'm not sure how they can recompense for that

I think SMT V will be considered a stepping stone for the series when whenever the fuck SMT 6 arrives, I think the biggest issues with this game lie in the main director/producer leaving halfway through the game and just the fact team maniax had no clue what the fuck they were doing with UE4 using it for the first time

Yamai the main director for the series since Shin Megami Tensei IV, left halfway through development of the game. meaning what he built around that point was either scrapped or had to be poorly stitched together in the final product

I knew something felt off after the Lahmu fight. The game's progression just sort of falls flat after that point

I liked it a lot too, i wish it had more story to it and bit darker too. Gameplay and overworld was excellent though

the mitama's that drop glory or whatever they're called (the ones that level up the mc) respawn after some time, but I never knew what determined it. There's a guaranteed spot in each of the game's areas, so visit them periodically

Honestly really liked how V handled Pierce this time around. The Shiva fight is so fucking fun to me because of the fact that you are doing everything to stop Shiva from popping Impaler's Animus in order to preserve your momentum in battle while he's constantly resummoning allies and dishing out some damage of his own. It's such a great fight and the way pierce was handled really made it shine for me.

I think Shiva might be the best designed boss in the series without dipping into the general super boss bullshit like DF.

How in the FUCK do you beat the 4 level 99 early game shitters. I literally just turned level 60, was happy I could recruit a metal dragon but now I have to deal with these fucks? What do they expect me to do?

I don't think there were any massive plot holes in SMT V besides the introduction of Mandala system and no clear explanation of how it, Goko, and the throne are tied together. But this isn't so bad because it's mostly just a plot device for Lucifer's motivations. It doesn't make the story incoherent and seems fairly clear it will be expanded in a rerelease/sequel.To me, the real issue is that in most SMTs the characters are utilitarian - they provide you with a goal and reason to go forward and have enough to them that it is a meaningful encounter when you finally battle them. In SMT V I was still wondering who was the chaos rapresentant after reaching the third area, and guessed that Ichiro was the Law one because he was always around Abdiel. Yakumo turning into a muh strength guy - generally a chaos thing - was weird as well. Yuzuru is rather promiment in the first half of the game and then basically stops existing and turns into the PM's yes man, his sister does nothign aside hanging around the forest. This has to be the weirdest attempt at character development for the alignment representants in the series so far.

This game needs more porn. Tao, Nuwa Amanozako, Norn. Hell, even the frumpy glasses imouto.

The alignment reps are all Law themed. Yuzuru is Chaos but he's beaurocratic lap dog that just wants to establish a multitheist government, Ichiro is Dark Law willing to break the rules if it means resurrecting YHVH, Yakumo is Neutral with Law's classic elitism and genocide attached to it just human first.

I think SMT fans desperate need for hot takes has left the game in a weird place. Especially cause from the start those who enjoyed it were pretty honest about where it could improve, but now it is frame as honey moon is over now every can see how Atlus betrayed us. It isn't a hard game to criticize, but this constant need to apologetically set up any compliment is pretty silly when overall it is a good game.

I think Magatsuhi is a pretty interesting addition and I hope they experiment with it more in 6 instead of scrapping it.

I dont think this is necessarily a bad thing. I personally wouldnt mind if an SMT game strayed away from the classic law/chaos/neutral motivations that have honestly become too traditional and predictable. Like chaos doesn't necessarily have to be associated with "power is everything", neutral being treated as another extreme makes it look less like the "less bad" option compared to prior SMT games that were very neutral-biased. But like you said, the game's structure is just all over the place where characters like Yuzuru are off screen for too long to the point where seeing him again after finishing the third area made me wonder just what the fuck he was doing all that time with the Prime Minister or the sudden romance between his sister and Khonsu that was just not foreshadowed well enough for it to be believable, nor the fact that his sister had cancer all of a sudden.

Alright alright real talk, now that the dust has settled, what is the final verdict on charm not 100% working?
